Over the last two months Cassie, Jabez and I have had some real fun. We have gone on several camping trips with an RV and then a tent too. My sister Carrie, and her family came out and we went camping in an area called Buena Vista. We camped at an elevation of 10,500 ft! It was beautiful with a lake nearby. The only issue we had was that the mosquito’s were horrible! My two nieces, Corrie and Mary, really loved camping in the mountains and I got to hang out with them while Carrie and her husband Brian tried to summit a nearby 14’er (14’ers are popular mountains above 14,000ft that hikers love to climb to the top of.)
Cassie has started school and this semester she is working in PED’s. She will spend two 8 hour days in the hospital dealing with sick and hurt children and then another 20 hours in classes at the school. We have 2 semesters left and Cassie is getting excited about finishing now that we can see the end.

Birthday for a friend

We had a birthday party for our friend Andy Miller. The cake was delicious thanks to Cassies gift of making desserts. She baked it and I created the final look (FJ40.) After cake, we roasted giant marshmallows (one mallow is about the size of four regular mallows.) We all had a great time in the backyard with a fire. I also got creative with a Happy Birthday sign, yes it is back light.

This is the church we have been attending in Colorado Springs. We usually ride our bikes to it. There are about 12-15 members and we LOVE IT! Our pastor believes that everyone should already be doing ministry outside of church and that Sunday is a time to regroup and encourage each other as we start another week on the battlefield. The pastor also does prison ministry which is right up my alley. Once a month I play soccer at a local prison and get to minister to the prisoners.

There are a few pranksters out here. Here is a few of the pranks that have been done to me and others we know. Yes I have done some of the pranks. The best part is imaging your friends faces when they wake up to this stuff.
I got someone back with this one. I wrapped his lawn mover with a complete roll of industrial cling wrap.
One of the better ones was this little mess of colorful Easter Eggs on Easter Sunday we woke up to.

We got Owled. Lots of pictures of owls ranging from small to poster size all over the house.
My truck got a hot used spoiler from the junkyard.

Others that I don't have a picture of...
- 25ft flag pole with a flag of a Wolf howling at the moon and was concreted into the ground. We put this in our friends front yard just before he moved into the house after he bought it. The neighbors really like him.
- 144 rubber ducks hidden in a house. This was done 2 years ago and the guy is still finding them.

All this to say... we like it out here in this town. Lot's of community!

What is it about Christians get so up-tight about Halloween? Halloween is such a hodge podge of ideas now. Pick something and enjoy the night. You have the original Druids dressing up to confuse the mischevious spirits, all-saints-day (thankyou to the catholic church), the homeless folk in America going door to door asking for goodies and then there was the boyscotts that took the Irish "tricking" and added "treating" to it inorder to apply control to the night. I am so thankful my parents let us celebrate the holiday. What is wrong with letting your kids dress up and partake in getting candy and treats. I guess my parents figured as long as I didn't dress up in a horror costume they were fine with it and why shouldn't they be. Here is an idea, raise your child up so that they don't want to be those things and then teach your kid to accept that other people don't have to live by your Christian standards just like I understand whomever reads doesn't have to do what I say. So what does it really mean to live in the world but not of the world? I could be way off here too, but I attribute that to the fact that I don't have kids.

Here are some pictures of last night. Every year we head to a friends house that is a real hot spot for treating. It is a bad picture but I just want to give you an idea. This amount of people continues for an hour or two. We go through about 20-30lbs of candy in that time.

Jabez was really tired from Cassie and I taking her on several hikes earlier in the day. We wondered were she was for most of the night and then found out that she had found someone inside the house that would pet her.

As always, PT has such a gift with kids liking him.

Andrew Hadley is getting married next week so we took him up to the mountains for a party.

So I was contemplating joining a gym but was concerned that I wouldn't enjoy it. I was right, so I bought a used kayak for $175 and now I can't wait to get out in the water in the morning. I saw some deer while exploring early this morning. Yes I know it is just a deer, however this lake is less than two miles from work and in the city.

we have been pretty busy with finals, Funtreks and friends. I have been playing soccer at the prisons through a ministry, Cassie quit working at the hospital just in time for finals which are consuming her time. I think she is just memorizing the entire text books, whatever she is doing it is working. I will start traveling late June around northern CO and then by winter I will head down to AZ hopefully. The backyard has grass which is great. Matt and Hannah (worked with youth with us) have moved back into town. Looking forward to fires and good food again.

I built a bed for the dog in hopes that she would sleep more. I know that sounds bad especially when your dog already sleeps 18 hours a day. The problem has been at 3-4am, she keeps waking up to go to the bathroom which is really annoying. So far she has sleep through 4 nights while on the new bed. Jabez really likes it, she won't come out of the bedroom much anymore. Cassie wants to paint the new bed and we are also getting a thicker mattress for her too.

I am to lazy to post these separate.

First we have some thanks giving dinner shots. Me cutting the "hen" and then taking the first bite (yes that is mountain dew in my cup).

Here is a picture of my dentist and his kid. Believe it or not I am visiting a dentist now these days. I am on 3 of 13 appointments. Not a bad deal for 20+ years of not going. 1 cavity, 1 root canal and 4 wisdom teeth to pull. He looks happy doesn't he.

We watched the awesome Iron Bowl in the garage with Chris and Claire all whom are huge AL fans.

Finally the tree. We went to the grocery store to get the decorated onee. Cassie and I will go to the mountains this weekend to cut down another one in which she will use to put garland up everywhere in the house. It always looks and smells so good when she is done.

This is the first time I have encountered this. A state trooper was going slow in the fast lane with all his christmas lights on. I think he was just trying to slow everybody down because you couldn't see more than a hundred yards in front of you.

When I got to work this was blocking the door. It was about 3.5 feet of snow.

If you don't remember we had grass when we bought the house several years ago. The previous owner never really explained why he put sod down and was not using the sprinkler system (at that time he was using a hose.) Well I have tried every year to get this sprinkler system working and finally this year I got them to work. So here is the progression....

After we got a dog and gave up watering the yard....

Now hope for the future. We just replanted some Kentucky Bluegrass and hopefully in less then 2 weeks we should have some visible grass again!

Matt "So over the last 2 weeks I have lived in an RV, Driven some of the most incredible trails in CO, played soccer in a prison, tried to eat a grasshopper and seen snow.

Yes it was snowing yesterday and yes it is July 30th.

So at the end of this scenic trail there was a huge building (next pitcure). It is amazing to see what the prospect of increasing ones wealth will make you do. This building was huge and at the end of a difficult trail including deep water crossings, large boulders and very steep inclines.

My absolute favorite trail so far, Holy Cross in Leadville CO. This is me coming down the trail at French Creek."

This was from the Starlight Spectacular that Cassie is a huge fan of. You get to ride 22 miles through Garden of the gods and downtown starting at midnight. When I first married Cassie she did this event and then a 5k run the next day. I sleep through both events :)

As a young driving male, back in high school, my friends and I were all in the stage of our parents gifting us cars to drive. I ended up with a ford tempo, not a sporty car but it was a set of wheels. I had a great friend get the car of every boys dream, a shiny 2 door red 1990 Honda Prelude 2.0 SI with four wheel steering and a sunroof. Wow, what a car, I mean it looked like a sexy actress in a movie and drove like a formula 1 race car (atleast to us as teenagers). I was always a little jealous of it. Well my jealousy finally ends because I now have that high school dream car. Sure it doesn't look quite like I remembered it and it runs a little rough but I did get it for $1000. Well here it is...

We both watch about 2-3 hours of TV a week. I don't feel like we are glued to the tube which is nice. We have a garage theater, I will post picts of it soon, that make this enjoyable.

We both watch an episode of Planet Earth a week, HIGHLY RECOMMEND this.

Thought I would try to convey some characteristics of what our dog is like.
This first picture is the room she stays in while we are gone. Yes, the dog door is half the door. Anyways we always fold up the blankets and place them neatly on the foam pads so she can have a comfortable place to lay if it rains or is snowing out. This picture displays how she rearranges things the way she likes it. Notice she is on a certain blanket even though other thicker and more comfortable blankets are available. She is a girl.

Next we have a something Cassie has been trying to teach her. Jabez will do anything Cassie does even bathe in the sun on a lawn chair. We prefer this to her usual pig-like activities of bathing in the sun until she can barely breathe because of heat and then covering herself in dirt before she comes into the house for shade.

Day six (Monday) in Europe

Today was a day we wished we where heading back to the states. We had seen everything on our list for London. Knowing we didn't have anything to do today we made the best of it by trying to get lost in the local streets of London. Visiting a few museums and a parks we walked almost 10 miles, it was totally worth it! What a way to end the trip. The next day we traveled and experienced completely empty flights on the way home. We found out that January is the time to travel.

Hyde Park is large enough to have a confusing sign telling you where the restrooms are.

Men be thankful for modern technology in medicine, this is what they used to use to remove those stones we get. You do not need much imagination to understand the approach the doctors took.

I found a early version of a PC.

Cassie found herself a perfect BMW. Seriously, she wants this vehicle.

Day five (Sunday) in Europe

Today we traveled from Paris back to London. Highlight of the day for PT was finally eating fish'n'chips. That was his one goal for this trip. We didn't do too much else. We did see a scary movie back in the hotel called "house of wax" which helped filter out the neighbors nighttime events. Our hotel room was the cheapest and least impressive. We found our cut off point for next year. The hotel room needs to be atleast $100. $50 will get you a bunch of springs with a towel over them to sleep on and a not so clean bathroom.

Day four (Saturday) in Europe

We started today with some breakfast at a cafe. Cassie was in heaven! We decided to walk most of the day due to the fact that I wanted to see the city and its marvelous buildings. High light of the day was eating supper under the Eiffel Tower with my wife. we really connected this night.

Day three (Friday) in Europe

Today started with a quick trip to the train that would take us to Paris. We were cutting it close on time and just made it to the train as it departed. The train was a fun trip through the chunnel and across France. Once we arrived in Paris and spent awhile trying to find our hotel. So Cassie gave me the map and said lead. I tried but I am not to fond of their roads and maps, you need a compass to get around Paris. We had dinner and saw Notre Dame. Paris is a beautiful place even if they hate Americans. This day was a challenge for me with the language barrier and the map thing. Please understand that I write guidebooks that have detailed directions in them and when I can't find my way around a famous town it really frustrated me. Oh well live and learn. Our Hotel was pretty rough, I felt like I was sleeping on some metal springs with a towel over them.

Today we got up late and decided to walk around to get a better view of London. We ended up walking about 5 miles. This day was just a hang out day and it was relaxing. Pt tried to find the Top Gear offices but we had no luck. We ended the glorious day with Cassie shopping at a popular place called Oxford st. All together this was a really fun day to just be with the wife on vacation.

Day one (Wednesday) in Europe

We arrived in London around 11am on Wednesday. Dropped our bags at the hotel and went site seeing. This was my first time in London and Cassie's fourth, I was the excited one. We saw most of London this day due in part to the London tube (public transportation.) Our hotel was by far the best hotel we stayed during the trip. Yes it was overcast but the temperature wasn't to bad. Remember, we saw all this in 6-7 hours after 10 hours of flying.

I joined a indoor soccer team a few weeks ago. Last night our game was at 12.05am. As I woke up this morning I thought to myself, "was it worth it?"
Of course it is!

Cassie has a huge Pathophisiolgy(sp?) test next week. (I am very proud of my wife taking classes I cannot even spell correctly.)

Sewer troubles

We had our first home repair last weekend. We have been without a major repair in almost 3 years since we have moved into this house.

So we noticed the shower drain was backing up. I used the snake and cleaned the traps out and then I went under the house in a tight crawl space to see what was going on. I was having Cassie run the water on the tub and then the sink and then I told her to flush the toilet... All she heard after that was me screaming "MAKE IT STOP!." I was right underneath the toilet when I asked her to flush it. I am sure she was concerned but all I felt was wet. So I figured out that the main sewer line which everything ran to was clogged. We had a company come out and fix it.

Live and Learn I guess.

Here are a few things that happened in November.

I borrowed my friends UTV and tried to get my boss to buy one. My tag line was "You can drive your grandson around in one!" He did like it.

Tree cutting. Some my friends have been taking advantage of the $30 forest permit to cut down 3 cords of wood (which is a lot of wood.) Our only requirements are to bring your own chainsaw or axe and you must wear a flannel.

You know your dog is high maintenance when she prefers the lounge chair over the ground while sun bathing. Notice the dirt on her back and head, she rolls around the yard like an elephant seal does on a beach. We have decided that Jabez is trying to live the life of an Elephant seal.

Heath family visits CO!

We had a surprise visit last weekend. Cassie's sister Kristi let us know on Friday morning that they will be at our house that night! We welcome spontaneous visits like this! It was a wonderful time and was just what Cassie and I needed. We have great friends out here but nothing, I mean absolutely nothing, compares to family visiting. Scott had 5 days off and instigated the whole trip. Thank you so much for the weekend blast of events which included Hikes, food, Dance Dance Revolution and a trip to the junkyard.

Half Marathon

Blogs are a great way to keep in contact. I have been personally challenged by reading about what is going on in the life of my good friend Dan Weiss. He has kept a daily journal while training for a half marathon. After reading his comments I am now wanting to try what he did.

I will not be able to update as much as he has done but when I do have the time I will share what I can. The muffin on the home page will show the number of miles I have completed as of 10/16/2008.

10/23:.2 mile run
thoughts:. running is not fun to me. but this will be worth it though. no muscle or health issue's yet.

10/24:.Dance Dance Revolution
thoughts:. This is a video game that you dance to. Cassie and I played for over an hour and are booth hurting.

10/25:.Hauling lumber
thoughts:. Went up to the mountains to cut and move trees for firewood. We did this for about 4 hours.

10/26:.4 mile run
thoughts:. Didn't have to walk through out the run.

10/27:.stretching
thoughts:. just going to take it easy and do a bunch of stretching tonight.

I just got back from Pomona CA the other day. I was there for a Off road Expo. We got to spend a few nights in Vegas too. Here are some memories of a talking tree and some cool fountains.

While at the off road show I saw some crazy motor cross. The best part about the conference is the fact that I was next to a corn dog vendor, absolute bliss!

Some of you heard that our 120lb dog ripped it's back paw pad clean off trying to get a squirrel in the backyard. Well, she was getting cabin fever not being able to get outdoors so we found a way to let her enjoy the fresh air.

Who would have thought that these two would be in love with each other.

Ever wonder why I choose to come to CO, A volunteer at Nappanee Missionary church showed me these pictures from when they lived in CO. She knew I liked 4x4's. Little did she know I would go shortly after seeing these. These pictures just say "cool, I want to be there doing that."

Camping on the 4th

This was a great camping trip. One of the best I have ever been on. On the menu for the trip we ate fettucini alfredo (from scratch,) grilled samon and french toast. There were 13 of us camping and we all had a really good time over the 3 days. Wildlife included bears and other furry animals.

First picture is the two lovely ladies resting during a rain storm.
Jabez didn't like the wet ground so she hoped up in a chair and then was mesmerized by the floating embers.

Some went for a gorgeous hike up to see Lily lake. Unfortunately only two made it to the lake.

Jabez didn't get to see the lake, she had a rough time keeping up. Luckily there was plenty of river crossings and shade.

There is no exageration on this tongue. That's the real one.

We took the dog on a hike in the mountains. She made it up to the top but on the way down she found some shade and sat in the middle of the trail. At the end of the trail we let her play in the river.
